The king who raised Joseph · Patriarchs
Pharaoh of Joseph in the Bible
Troubled by two dreams no one can read, this Pharaoh brings a Hebrew prisoner out of the dungeon, hears him credit the interpretation to God, and hands him the administration of Egypt. He settles Jacob's family in Goshen and gives Joseph leave to bury his father in Canaan.
What Scripture says, and what it leaves open
Genesis never names him. Suggestions range from a Hyksos ruler to a king of the Twelfth Dynasty; the Bible offers no detail that settles it, and no Egyptian record of Joseph has been found.
