Caesarea in the Bible
Herod's harbour city is the Roman administrative capital of Judea: Cornelius' household is baptised here, Herod Agrippa dies here, and Paul is held here for two years before sailing for Rome.
Archaeology
The stone bearing Pontius Pilate's name and title was found reused in the theatre here in 1961 — the only inscription naming Pilate from his own lifetime. The submerged harbour works are a landmark of Roman engineering.
