Capernaum in the Bible
Capernaum becomes Jesus' base in Galilee: the calling of fishermen and a tax collector, the healing of the centurion's servant and Peter's mother-in-law, and the bread of life discourse in its synagogue.
Geographic context
Capernaum on the map
Capernaum sat on the northwest shore of the Sea of Galilee, near where the Jordan enters the lake. Its excavated ruins, called Kfar Nahum, include a later synagogue and a house venerated as Peter's.
Archaeology
A fourth- or fifth-century white limestone synagogue stands on black basalt foundations of an earlier building, and an octagonal Byzantine church covers a first-century house venerated from an early date as Peter's.
