Jordan valley, north of the Dead Sea · Today: Tell es-Sultan / Jericho, West Bank

Jericho in the Bible

Jericho is the first city Israel faces west of the Jordan, taken after seven days of circling. It reappears as the setting of the good Samaritan's road, Zacchaeus in his sycamore, and blind Bartimaeus by the roadside.

Archaeology

Tell es-Sultan is among the oldest continuously occupied sites known, with a Neolithic tower and wall thousands of years older than Israel. The dating of its Bronze Age destruction remains one of the most argued questions in biblical archaeology.
