Mount Sinai in the Bible
Also called Mount Horeb
Sinai is where Moses meets God at the burning bush and where Israel receives the law amid smoke and trumpet blast. Elijah later travels back to the same mountain to hear the low whisper.
Archaeology
No inscription fixes the site. Jebel Musa in the southern Sinai carries the strongest tradition, preserved at Saint Catherine's monastery, while several northern and Arabian candidates continue to be argued.
