Genesis 37 — Scripture text (King James Version)
And 3290 dwelt3427 in the land776 wherein his father1 was a stranger4033, in the land776 of 3667. wherein: Heb. of his father's sojournings These are the generations8435 of 3290. 3130, being seventeen6240 7651 years8141 old1121, was feeding7462 the flock6629 with his brethren251; and the lad5288 was with the sons1121 of Bilhah1090, and with the sons1121 of Zilpah2153, his father's1 wives802: and 3130 brought935 unto his father1 their evil7451 report1681. Now 3478 loved157 3130 more than all his children1121, because he was the son1121 of his old age2208: and he made6213 him a coat3801 of many colours6446. colours: or, pieces And when his brethren251 saw7200 that their father1 loved157 him more than all his brethren251, they hated8130 him, and could3201 not speak1696 peaceably7965 unto him. And 3130 dreamed2492 a 2472, and he told5046 it his brethren251: and they hated8130 him yet the more3254. And he said559 unto them, Hear8085, I pray you, this 2472 which I have dreamed2492: For, behold, we were binding481 8432 sheaves485 in the field7704, and, lo, my sheaf485 arose6965, and also stood upright5324; and, behold, your sheaves485 stood round about5437, and made obeisance7812 to my sheaf485. And his brethren251 said559 to him, Shalt thou indeed4427 reign4427 over us? or shalt thou indeed4910 have dominion4910 over us? And they hated8130 him yet the more3254 for his dreams2472, and for his words1697. And he dreamed2492 yet another312 2472, and told5608 it his brethren251, and said559, Behold, I have dreamed2492 a 2472 more; and, behold, the sun8121 and the moon3394 and the eleven6240 259 stars3556 made obeisance7812 to me. And he told5608 it to his father1, and to his brethren251: and his father1 rebuked1605 him, and said559 unto him, What is this 2472 that thou hast dreamed2492? Shall I and thy mother517 and thy brethren251 indeed935 come935 to bow down7812 ourselves to thee to the earth776? And his brethren251 envied7065 him; but his father1 observed8104 the saying1697. And his brethren251 went3212 to feed7462 their father's1 flock6629 in 7927. And 3478 said559 unto 3130, Do not thy brethren251 feed7462 the flock in 7927? come3212, and I will send thee7971 unto them. And he said559 to him, Here am I. And he said559 to him, Go3212, I pray thee, see7200 whether it be 7965 with thy brethren251, and 7965 with the flocks6629; and bring7725 me word1697 again7725. So he sent7971 him out of the vale6010 of 2275, and he came935 to 7927. see: Heb. see the peace of thy brethren, etc. And a certain man376 found him4672, and, behold, he was wandering8582 in the field7704: and the man376 asked him7592, saying559, What seekest1245 thou? And he said559, I seek1245 my brethren251: tell5046 me, I pray thee, where375 they feed7462 their flocks. And the man376 said559, They are departed5265 hence2088; for I heard8085 them say559, Let us go3212 to 1886. And 3130 went3212 after310 his brethren251, and found4672 them in 1886. And when they saw7200 him afar off7350, even before he came near7126 unto them, they conspired5230 against him to slay4191 him. And they said559 one376 to another251, Behold, this1976 dreamer1167 2472 cometh935. dreamer: Heb. master of dreams Come3212 now therefore, and let us slay2026 him, and cast7993 him into some259 pit953, and we will say559, Some evil7451 beast2416 hath devoured398 him: and we shall see7200 what will become of his dreams2472. And 7205 heard8085 it, and he delivered5337 him out of their hands3027; and said559, Let us not kill5221 5315 him. And 7205 said559 unto them, Shed8210 no blood1818, but cast7993 him into this pit953 that is in the wilderness4057, and lay7971 no hand3027 upon him; that he might rid5337 him out of their hands3027, to deliver7725 him to his father1 again7725. And it came to pass, when 3130 was come935 unto his brethren251, that they stript6584 853 3130 out of854 his coat3801, his coat3801 of many colours6446 that was him; colours: or, pieces And they took3947 him, and cast7993 him into a pit953: and the pit953 was empty7386, there was no water4325 in it. And they sat down3427 to eat398 bread3899: and they lifted up5375 their eyes5869 and looked7200, and, behold, a company736 of Ishmeelites3459 came935 from 1568 with their camels1581 bearing5375 spicery5219 and balm6875 and myrrh3910, going1980 to carry it down3381 to 4714. And 3063 said559 unto his brethren251, What profit1215 is it if we slay2026 our brother251, and conceal3680 his blood1818? Come3212, and let us sell4376 him to the Ishmeelites3459, and let not our hand3027 be upon him; for he is our brother251 and our flesh1320. And his brethren251 were content8085. were: Heb. hearkened Then there passed5674 by 4084 merchantmen582 5503; and they drew4900 and lifted up5927 3130 out of the pit953, and sold4376 3130 to the Ishmeelites3459 for twenty6242 3701: and they brought935 3130 into 4714. And 7205 returned7725 unto the pit953; and, behold, 3130 was not in the pit953; and he rent7167 his clothes899. And he returned7725 unto his brethren251, and said559, The child3206 is not; and I, whither575 shall I go935? And they took3947 's3130 coat3801, and killed7819 a kid8163 of the goats5795, and dipped2881 the coat3801 in the blood1818; And they sent7971 the coat3801 of many colours6446, and they brought935 it to their father1; and said559, This have we found4672: know5234 now whether it be thy son's1121 coat3801 or no. And he knew it5234, and said559, It is my son's1121 coat3801; an evil7451 beast2416 hath devoured398 him; 3130 is without doubt2963 rent in pieces2963. And 3290 rent7167 his clothes8071, and 7760 sackcloth8242 upon his loins4975, and mourned56 for his son1121 many7227 days3117. And all his sons1121 and all his daughters1323 rose up6965 to comfort5162 him; but he refused3985 to be comforted5162; and he said559, For I will go down3381 into the grave7585 unto my son1121 mourning57. Thus his father1 wept1058 for him. And the 4092 sold4376 him into 4714 unto 6318, an officer5631 of 's6547, and captain8269 of the guard2876. officer: Heb. eunuch: but doth signify not only eunuchs, but also chamberlains, courtiers, and officers captain: or, chief marshal: Heb. chief of the slaughter men, or executioners
