Genesis 42 — Scripture text (King James Version)

Now when 3290 saw7200 that there was3426 corn7668 in 4714, 3290 said559 unto his sons1121, Why do ye look7200 one upon another? And he said559, Behold, I have heard8085 that there is3426 corn7668 in 4714: get you down3381 thither, and buy7666 for us from thence; that we may live2421, and not die4191. And 's3130 ten6235 brethren251 went down3381 to buy7666 corn1250 in 4714. But 1144, Joseph's3130 brother251, 3290 sent7971 not with his brethren251; for he said559, Lest peradventure6435 mischief611 befall him7122. And the sons1121 of 3478 came935 to buy7666 corn among8432 those that came935: for the famine7458 was in the land776 of 3667. And 3130 was the governor7989 over the land776, and he it was that sold7666 to all the people5971 of the land776: and 's3130 brethren251 came935, and bowed down7812 themselves before him with their faces639 to the earth776. And 3130 saw7200 his brethren251, and he knew5234 them, but made himself strange5234 unto them, and spake1696 roughly7186 unto them; and he said559 unto them, Whence370 come935 ye? And they said559, From the land776 of 3667 to buy7666 food400. roughly: Heb. hard things with them And 3130 knew5234 his brethren251, but they knew5234 not him. And 3130 remembered2142 the dreams2472 which he dreamed2492 of them, and said559 unto them, Ye are spies7270; to see7200 the nakedness6172 of the land776 ye are come935. And they said559 unto him, Nay, my lord113, but to buy7666 food400 are thy servants5650 come935. We5168 are all one259 man's376 sons1121; we are true3651 men, thy servants5650 are no spies7270. And he said559 unto them, Nay, but to see7200 the nakedness6172 of the land776 ye are come935. And they said559, Thy servants5650 are twelve8147 6240 brethren251, the sons1121 of one259 man376 in the land776 of 3667; and, behold, the youngest6996 is this day3117 with our father1, and one259 is not. And 3130 said559 unto them, That is it that I spake1696 unto you, saying559, Ye are spies7270: Hereby2063 ye shall be proved974: By the life2416 of 6547 ye shall not go forth3318 hence, except your youngest6996 brother251 come935 hither. Send7971 one259 of you, and let him fetch3947 your brother251, and ye shall be kept in prison631, that your words1697 may be proved974, whether there be any truth571 in854 you: or else3808 by the life2416 of 6547 surely ye are spies7270. kept: Heb. bound And he them all together622 into ward4929 three7969 days3117. : Heb. gathered And 3130 said559 unto them the third7992 day3117, This do6213, and live2421; for I fear3373 God430: If ye be true3651 men, let one259 of your brethren251 be bound631 in the house1004 of your prison4929: go3212 ye, carry935 corn7668 for the famine7459 of your houses1004: But bring935 your youngest6996 brother251 unto me; so shall your words1697 be verified539, and ye shall not die4191. And they did6213 so. And they said559 one376 to another251, We are verily61 guilty818 concerning our brother251, in that834 we saw7200 the anguish6869 of his soul5315, when he besought2603 us, and we would not hear8085; therefore is this distress6869 come935 upon us. And 7205 answered6030 them, saying559, Spake I559 not unto you, saying559, Do not sin2398 against the child3206; and ye would not hear8085? therefore, behold, also his blood1818 is required1875. And they knew3045 not that 3130 understood8085 them; for he spake unto them by an interpreter3887. he spake: Heb. an interpreter was between them And he turned himself about5437 from them, and wept1058; and returned to them again7725, and communed1696 with them, and took3947 from them 8095, and bound631 him before their eyes5869. Then 3130 commanded6680 to fill4390 their sacks3627 with corn1250, and to restore7725 every man's376 money3701 into his sack8242, and to give5414 them provision6720 for the way1870: and thus3651 did he6213 unto them. And they laded5375 their asses2543 with the corn7668, and departed3212 thence. And as one259 of them opened6605 his sack8242 to give5414 his ass2543 provender4554 in the inn4411, he espied7200 his money3701; for, behold, it was in his sack's572 mouth6310. And he said559 unto his brethren251, My money3701 is restored7725; and, lo2009, it is even in my sack572: and their heart3820 failed3318 them, and they were afraid2729, saying559 one376 to another251, What is this that God430 hath done6213 unto us? failed: Heb. went forth And they came935 unto 3290 their father1 unto the land776 of 3667, and told5046 him all that befell7136 unto them; saying559, The man376, who is the lord113 of the land776, spake1696 roughly7186 to us, and took5414 us for spies7270 of the country776. roughly: Heb. with us hard things And we said559 unto him, We are true3651 men; we are no spies7270: We be twelve6240 8147 brethren251, sons1121 of our father1; one259 is not, and the youngest6996 is this day3117 with our father1 in the land776 of 3667. And the man376, the lord113 of the country776, said559 unto us, Hereby shall I know3045 that ye are true3651 men; leave3240 one259 of your brethren251 here with me, and take3947 food for the famine7459 of your households1004, and be gone3212: And bring935 your youngest6996 brother251 unto me: then shall I know3045 that ye are no spies7270, but that ye are true3651 men: so will I deliver5414 you your brother251, and ye shall traffick5503 in the land776. And it came to pass as they emptied7324 their sacks8242, that, behold, every man's376 bundle6872 of money3701 was in his sack8242: and when both they and their father1 saw7200 the bundles6872 of money3701, they were afraid3372. And 3290 their father1 said559 unto them, Me have ye bereaved7921 of my children: 3130 is not, and 8095 is not, and ye will take3947 1144 away: all these things are against me. And 7205 spake559 unto his father1, saying559, Slay4191 my two8147 sons1121, if I bring935 him not to thee: deliver5414 him into my hand3027, and I will bring him to thee again7725. And he said559, My son1121 shall not go down3381 with you; for his brother251 is dead4191, and he is left7604 alone: if mischief611 befall7122 him by the way1870 in the which ye go3212, then shall ye bring down3381 my gray hairs7872 with sorrow3015 to the grave7585.
