Genesis 44 — Scripture text (King James Version)
And he commanded6680 the steward of his house1004, saying559, Fill4390 the men's582 sacks572 with food400, as much as834 they can3201 carry5375, and 7760 every man's376 money3701 in his sack's572 mouth6310. the steward: Heb. him that was over his house And 7760 my cup1375, the silver3701 cup1375, in the sack's572 mouth6310 of the youngest6996, and his corn7668 money3701. And he did6213 according to 1697 that 3130 had spoken1696. As soon as the morning1242 was light215, the men582 were sent away7971, they and their asses2543. And when they were gone out3318 of the city5892, and not yet far off7368, 3130 said559 unto his steward1004, Up6965, follow7291 after310 the men582; and when thou dost overtake5381 them, say559 unto them, Wherefore have ye rewarded7999 evil7451 for good2896? Is not this it in which my lord113 drinketh8354, and whereby indeed5172 he divineth5172? ye have done evil7489 in so doing6213. divineth: or, maketh trial? And he overtook5381 them, and he spake1696 unto them these same428 words1697. And they said559 unto him, Wherefore saith1696 my lord113 these words1697? God forbid2486 that thy servants5650 should do6213 according to this thing1697: Behold, the money3701, which we found4672 in our sacks'572 mouths6310, we brought again7725 unto thee out of the land776 of 3667: how then should we steal1589 out of thy lord's113 house1004 silver3701 or gold2091? With whomsoever of thy servants5650 it be found4672, both let him die4191, and we also will be my lord's113 bondmen5650. And he said559, Now also let it be according unto your words1697:3651 he with whom it is found4672 shall be my servant5650; and ye shall be blameless5355. Then they speedily4116 took down3381 every man376 his sack572 to the ground776, and opened6605 every man376 his sack572. And he searched2664, and began2490 at the eldest1419, and left3615 at the youngest6996: and the cup1375 was found4672 in 's1144 sack572. Then they rent7167 their clothes8071, and laded6006 every man376 his ass2543, and returned7725 to the city5892. And 3063 and his brethren251 came935 to 's3130 house1004; for he was yet there: and they fell5307 before him6440 the ground776. And 3130 said559 unto them, What deed4639 is this that ye have done6213? wot ye3045 not that such a man376 as I can certainly5172 divine5172? divine: or, make trial? And 3063 said559, What shall we say559 unto my lord113? what shall we speak1696? or how shall we clear ourselves6663? God430 hath found out4672 the iniquity5771 of thy servants5650: behold, we are my lord's113 servants5650, both we, and he also1571 with whom834 3027 the cup1375 is found4672. And he said559, God forbid2486 that I should do6213 so2063: but the man376 in whose hand3027 the cup1375 is found4672, he shall be my servant5650; and as for you, get you up5927 in peace7965 unto your father1. Then 3063 came near5066 unto him, and said559, Oh994 my lord113, let thy servant5650, I pray thee, speak1696 a word1697 in my lord's113 ears241, and let not thine anger639 burn2734 against thy servant5650: for thou art even as 6547. My lord113 asked7592 his servants5650, saying559, Have3426 ye a father1, or a brother251? And we said559 unto my lord113, We have3426 a father1, an old man2205, and a child3206 of his old age2208, a little one6996; and his brother251 is dead4191, and he alone is left3498 of his mother517, and his father1 loveth157 him. And thou saidst559 unto thy servants5650, Bring him down3381 unto me, that I may set7760 mine eyes5869 upon him. And we said559 unto my lord113, The lad5288 cannot3201 leave5800 his father1: for if he should leave5800 his father1, his father would die4191. And thou saidst559 unto thy servants5650, Except3808 your youngest6996 brother251 come down3381 with you, ye shall see7200 3254 my face6440 no more7200 3254. And it came to pass when we came up5927 unto thy servant5650 my father1, we told5046 him the words1697 of my lord113. And our father1 said559, Go again7725, and buy7666 us a little4592 food400. And we said559, We cannot3201 go down3381: if our youngest6996 brother251 be3426 with us, then will we go down3381: for we may3201 not see7200 the man's376 face6440, except369 our youngest6996 brother251 be with us. And thy servant5650 my father1 said559 unto us, Ye know3045 that my wife802 bare3205 me two8147 sons: And the one259 went out3318 from me, and I said559, Surely2963 he is torn in pieces2963; and I saw him7200 not since2008: And if ye take3947 this also from5973 me6440, and mischief611 befall him7136, ye shall bring down3381 my gray hairs7872 with sorrow7451 to the grave7585. Now therefore when I come935 to thy servant5650 my father1, and the lad5288 be not with us; seeing that his life5315 is bound up7194 in the lad's life5315; It shall come to pass, when he seeth7200 that the lad5288 is not with us, that he will die4191: and thy servants5650 shall bring down3381 the gray hairs7872 of thy servant5650 our father1 with sorrow3015 to the grave7585. For thy servant5650 became surety6148 for the lad5288 unto5973 my father1, saying559, If I bring935 him not unto thee, then I shall the blame2398 to my father1 for ever3117. Now therefore, I pray thee, let thy servant5650 abide3427 instead of the lad5288 a bondman5650 to my lord113; and let the lad5288 go up5927 with his brethren251. For how349 shall I go up5927 to my father1, and the lad5288 be not with me? lest peradventure I see7200 the evil7451 that shall come 4672 my father1. come: Heb. find my father
