Jesus Through Samaria — Map & Route
Follow Jesus from Judea through Samaria to Sychar and Jacob's Well, where one conversation opens into a Samaritan town's belief before he continues to Galilee. (c. AD 28–29)
Why the geography matters
The direct road from Judea to Galilee crossed Samaria. Some travellers also used a longer route through Perea, but avoidance of Samaria was not universal; John presents both a real journey and a purposeful encounter.
John 4:1–42 · Jesus, Samaritan Woman, Jacob
John 4:4 in geographic context
The direct road and the eastern alternative
Jews and Samaritans carried deep religious and social tensions. The direct road north crossed Samaria; some travellers used a longer route through the Jordan Valley and Perea. Jesus went through Samaria, and John places his meeting at Jacob’s Well at the heart of the journey.
Interpretive note: A schematic eastern alternative used by some travellers. John does not say Jesus considered this route, and Jewish avoidance of Samaria was not universal.
