Darius in the Bible

Tricked by his own officials into a decree he cannot revoke, Darius spends a sleepless night at the mouth of the lions' den. A later Darius orders the search of the archives that lets the temple be finished.

What Scripture says, and what it leaves open

Daniel's "Darius the Mede" is not securely matched to a ruler known from Persian records; several identifications are proposed. Darius I of Ezra 6 is well attested.
