Egypt in the Bible
Egypt is refuge and prison by turns: grain in famine for Jacob's family, four centuries of slavery, the exodus, and later the country Joseph and Mary flee to with the child. Prophets keep warning Judah not to lean on it.
Archaeology
The Merneptah stele of about 1208 BC carries the earliest known mention of Israel outside the Bible, and Semitic settlement in the eastern Delta at Tell el-Dab'a matches the Goshen described in Genesis.
